Changing perceptions of sialorrhoea across Europe

A neglected concern

Sialorrhoea, commonly known as excessive drooling, is a condition characterised by excessive saliva production and/or difficulty in swallowing or managing saliva. Its occurrence after the age of four may be associated with various underlying medical conditions or neurological disorders.

Our comprehensive market research revealed a concerning trend: healthcare professionals (HCPs) often disregard sialorrhoea as a non-priority issue, overlooking its impact on quality of life. Moreover, there exists a significant lack of awareness regarding the diagnosis, treatment and management of sialorrhoea across Europe. This challenge is exacerbated by the absence of clear advice on treatment pathways and guidelines among European countries.

Disrupting the market

Our communication plan aimed to disrupt the perception of sialorrhoea among HCPs by creating a well-thought-through medical education programme. We aim to shed light on the importance of early diagnosis, effective management and treatment of sialorrhoea, emphasising its significant impact on quality of life.

Central to our communication strategy was the formation of the International Sialorrhoea Steering Group (ISSG), collaborating with key opinion leaders (KOLs) to drive educational efforts targeting HCPs across Europe. Our campaign assets included an HCP-centric website, brochure, video content and so much more, with concise messaging that was translated into multiple languages.

Empowering HCPs through education

We engaged with healthcare professionals at prominent congresses, providing delegates with comprehensive information about the ISSG and their mission in raising awareness of the condition.

• Attendees – Over 300 delegates
• Resource Packs – 300 downloads
• Group Support – 13 HCPs joined the group

Through presentations and interactive sessions, we engaged the experts in this area and shared crucial insights into sialorrhoea diagnosis, management and treatment, empowering HCPs to address this overlooked concern.
